How Planting a Vegetable Garden Can

Imagine....
.... planting a vegetable garden in your own back yard then picking perfectly ripe, perfectly delicious tomatoes without having to wonder what chemicals went into growing them.
.... or picking runner beans, plump and ready for eating, fresh off the vine for dinner.
Imagine....
.... all the ingredients for a salad at hand and ready when you are - without the expense of buying it at the supermarket.
I turned my dream into reality as you can see from the pictures on this page. With just a smallish garden I and my family enjoyed many fresh, delicious and varied vegetables. We weren't self sufficient but by planting a vegetable garden we were able to appreciate what fresh really meant.
The pictures on this page are 20 years old now and my children (pictured) have
left home. Kirsty - just peeking through the sunflowers to the left of Philip - has three children of her own (Isaac, Reuben and Noah) and their dad is Paul.
Abbie is the "cabbage patch doll" and is also holding my hands in the greenhouse photo.
I hope you will meet them later somewhere on this site, as they are now... looking healthy and fit - we are very proud of them and truly give thanks to God for them.
About ten years after those photos were taken I started my own business and because I became so busy I grassed over my vegetable garden. These days I have more time on my hands and I am keen to resurrect my vegetable garden... these pages will partly detail projects taking shape.
We always like to save the best to last, don't we - you haven't met my wife Ros yet... she is in the bottom photo with Kirsty and Abbie against a back drop of runner beans (the rabbit is a black and tan - they belonged to the children but guess who cleaned them out... Ros).
She is the inspiration behind me planting a vegetable garden because she is such a great cook. Ros turns all our vegetable produce into wonderful salads, roasts and soups - to mention but a few.
Ros affectionately calls many of her creations 'bodge-ups' as she deviates from the recipe or makes up her own, not knowing quite where it will lead. But my usual response at the end of a meal is "that was yummy mummy".
So don't let anything get in your way - you too....
...can have all these vegetables and more by planting a vegetable garden.

Planting a vegetable garden of your own pays off with big benefits in so many ways.
There's the obvious benefits of having healthy, nutritious foods to add to your families diet every day of course.
There are other advantages to planting vegetables that aren't quite as up front and on the surface.
....Did you know that gardening burns almost twice as many calories as a brisk walk?
....Or that people who garden regularly report more satisfaction with their lives than those who never garden?
Add those to the pride and sense of accomplishment that accompanies eating food that you produced yourself - with no or fewer pesticides, and you can see why growing vegetables is a win-win situation.
If you're already convinced that planting a vegetable garden is the best thing you can do for your health and happiness but aren't sure where to start, you've come to the right place.
